Two Myths About Security Systems

Blog

Here are a couple of myths about security systems.

Homeowners don't need security systems if they're almost always at home

Homeowners who hardly ever travel or socialise outside their homes sometimes fall for the myth that they don't need security systems, as they think these systems are only meant to protect unoccupied properties, because burglars won't break into a building if they see that there are people inside it.

The truth is that there are burglars who are prepared to break into a building, even after they've realised that it's occupied. Furthermore, the type of burglar who is willing to do this could potentially be aggressive and might injure any occupant who tries to confront them. Additionally, even if a burglar ceases their attempted burglary after spotting occupants in a building, their initial efforts to get inside could result in property damage (in the form of, for example, a damaged lock or a cracked windowpane).

Finally, even if a person is a homebody who rarely has the desire to leave their home, there may still be occasions when they have to do this for an extended period (if for example, they need to travel for work). If in this situation they need to leave their home unoccupied and it has no security system, a burglar might target it.

If however, a homeowner has a security system and there are visible indicators of this system's presence on their property (such as warning stickers on the windows or exterior security cameras), most burglars who come across the home will not break into it, regardless of whether it looks empty or occupied, as they won't want to be recorded or to set off the alarm. As such, a home like this would not only be less likely to be damaged or burglarised but its occupants would also be less likely to be injured by burglars.

Security systems are complicated to install and operate

Another myth about these systems is that they're complicated to install and operate. Whilst, in order to to ensure their clients' needs are met, security companies who fit these systems usually need to have a consultation with their clients and visit their homes to evaluate their security requirements, this process is quite quick and straightforward, and the security company will do all of the hard work (that is, taking the appropriate measurements, assessing the property's vulnerabilities, etc.) for each client.

Furthermore, the installation of this system rarely takes more than a day. The only instances in which the installation may take longer is if the building in which it's being fitted is extremely large. Additionally, much like any other form of technology, operating a security system takes some practice but, after a few days of setting it on and off, the average person will find it extremely easy to use and won't have to give this process much thought at all.

Are Panic Alarms Necessary for Your Household?

When homeowners think of security systems, their minds tend to drift to blaring alarm systems that will make cacophonous noise when an intruder tries to break into their homes. While these systems are great at deterring potential crimes, what happens when burglars make their way into your home undetected? For this reason, it is advisable to deliberate on installing panic alarms in your home. However, panic alarms are not solely used to alert the authorities of a home invasion. Another benefit of panic alarms is they can signal the authorities if you are to acquire an injury in the home that renders you immobile. Alternately, you can also trigger the panic alarm when facing domestic violence in your home. For more on how these security systems work and whether they would be a good fit for your household, check out these posts on panic alarms and their features.
